In these times of higher prices on everyday food items and oil, and even higher profits for the companies who produce them. Its a bit rich for our farmers in New Zealand to object to NZ supermarkets and meat outlets selling us imported meat. When it is them and the oil companies that keep reminding us that we live in a world market driven economy, thats the way it is. Their reason for saying its not their fault for the price rises, its the market they deal in. In other words if the overseas world markets demand higher prises, then the New Zealand market has to pay the same. Yet we here everyday that you can buy the same New Zealand product overseas cheaper than back here in New Zealand who produce it. We are also told the local markets gets second best, as all the good stuff is exported. So don't be surprised Farmers in these times of financial belt tightening, that our supermarkets that are price driven, buy their products including meat and dairy products from overseas markets. At the end of the day they have to supply the best price and quality they can to their market, their consumers. For Farmers to ask the supermarkets and the New Zealand consumer for loyalty, when they don't. By putting New Zealand produced labels on their products will just be warning consumers its to expensive to buy. Thats the reality.
